About Morro Bay

Morro Bay is a small beach city situated by the ocean with a population of a little over 10,000 people. The Chumash tribe of Native Americans originally inhabited the Morro Creek area. After that, a Mexican land grant split occurred and the town needed a port for the export of dairy and cattle products. The town became established in 1870 and soon after a wharf was built. The city did not incorporate until 1964 of which the town was popular with abalone fishing.

Morro name translates into “distinctive and prominent rock formation;” hence the famous Morro Rock volcanic plug formation.

The city is right at the ocean with a harbor and bird sanctuary. The Morro Bay climate does not change much. The summer days are in the mid to upper 60’s while in the evening it’s in the low 50’s. In the winter, it declines to the low 60’s during the day and low 40’s at night.

The latitude and longitude of Morro Bay is 35.379043, -120.853354.
